History of StackCare

StackCare’s pioneering system was launched in 2017, the brainchild of our US founders in Silicon Valley, California.  The concept for StackCare came about through the personal experiences of those in the team with aging parents and grandparents – they decided to attempt to build a new product that would give them some daily insight into how their loved ones were getting along at home.

Driven by the knowledge that they could harness their expertise in technology to make life easier for both the elderly relative and their families and carers, initially the team started to implement a professional version of StackCare for retirement communities. Over 18 months, StackCare successfully built working relationships with communities across North America, from California to Vancouver to Tennessee to Toronto.

So many people requested an at-home version of StackCare it became obvious that developing it was a logical next step. In December 2019 'StackCare @home’ was launched online to friends and family.

In January 2021 StackCare UK was launched, bringing the unique StackCare technology, and all its benefits, to those in the UK also seeking peace of mind and security both to elderly people living alone and those who loved and cared for them.

StackCare UK is run by CEO Noel Verbruggen, who, like our colleagues in the US, was motivated to launch the UK business as it struck a chord with his own experiences of when his mother fell ill. Like many older people she was fiercely independent and didn’t think she needed care. She was so determined to stay independent that she went as far as to cover up an infection she had contracted – and unfortunately it turned out to be cancerous. Although it was treatable and started off benign, by the time she was treated it was too late and she passed away shortly afterwards.

Noel commented – “It upset me – and still does – that we didn’t have any idea about the infection.  It also made me wonder how we could have better monitored how she was getting on and kept a closer eye on her whilst maintaining the independence that she was so keen to have.  And that’s why I was so keen to be a part of StackCare and to make it available here in the UK.

“People are increasingly keen to live in their own homes for as long as possible and often care packages aren’t a route that older people want to go down until absolutely necessary.  I believe that StackCare bridges that period where families, and their loved ones, want the peace of mind of knowing all is OK but aren’t ready for a more interventionist approach, and for me that has to be a good thing,”
